On December 9, 2021, the Santa Maria Airport and Planes of Fame Air Museum signed a long-term lease agreement for 23.89 acres. The site is intended for the development of a new museum campus.
Lease negotiations between Santa Maria Airport and Planes of Fame Air Museum have concluded and a favorable lease has been granted to the museum. This is a huge milestone as the search and negotiation for the perfect location has been a multiyear process. The museum now has approximately three years to development phase one of the project and hopes to open their doors to the public by 2025.
Currently, the museum is performing final site due diligence and drafting an updated master design concept for the site. The intention is to develop the site in three phases, approximately one third of the property at a time. Phase One would consist of a large visitor center that will welcome guests to the museum campus. It would include a large amount of display space for museum aircraft as well as other collection pieces. The building would also feature a lobby, gift shop, possibly a cafe space, offices, and other museum support areas.
Planes of Fame would like to take this opportunity to thank the Santa Maria Airport District for the opportunity to bring the air museum to the California Central Coast!
