Programs
The mission of Planes of Fame Air Museum is to preserve aviation history, inspire interest in aviation, educate the public, and honor aviation pioneers and veterans. Phase One programming to support this mission is outlined below.
Permanent Exhibition
The Permanent Exhibition in the main display hangar of Building "Alpha" will explore the advancement in technology that led to the nation’s success in World War II, showcasing the aircraft, pilots, mechanics, engineers and service members that shaped the world we live in today.
Auditorium
The Auditorium will present exciting and engaging public programming including lectures, performances, and special events to lead meaningful dialogues, connect people and communities, and celebrate STEM and aviation history. Our monthly Living History Flying Day educational events will take place in this hangar.
Restoration & Maintenance Center
The Restoration and Maintenance Center is a dedicated facility where historical aircraft undergo meticulous restoration and conservation. It provides museum patrons with a unique opportunity to view live aircraft conservation in action, offering an educational and immersive experience into the intricate process of aircraft preservation.
Skyward Bound
The High School Skyward Bound Program takes place in the days before the AirFest, allowing students to get an up close look at various performing aircraft and learn directly from a diverse panel of experienced professionals. This program provides valuable exposure to aviation, encouraging students to pursue their dreams and consider STEM careers.
Youth Art Contest
This competition is open to students in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. The contest encourages young artists to explore aviation themes and develop their creativity. Finalists win tickets to the Central Coast AirFest.
Ed Maloney Scholarship Fund
The Ed Maloney Scholarship Fund is dedicated to supporting students pursuing studies in aviation, aerospace and history, honoring the legacy of museum founder Ed Maloney. The fund provides financial assistance to deserving individuals, helping to foster the next generation of aviation professionals.
Aircraft Rides
The Living History Flight Experience in the P-51 Mustang offers enthusiasts the chance to fly in one of World War II's most iconic fighter aircraft, providing a thrilling and immersive journey into aviation history. Participants can experience the power and agility of the Mustang, and enjoy stunning views from the cockpit.
Gift Shop
The Gift Shop will be a marketplace of museum related goods serving patrons with a special selection of unique gifts, books, souvenirs, and memorabilia that complement the museum’s programming and enhance the visitor experience.
